Plain Sailing for MMF River Cruise

August 2023

People love messing about on the river, and it was no different for Friends and guests who enjoyed a scenic evening aboard the Kentish Lady

This year’s annual outing on Thursday August 3, 2023, hosted by Maidstone Museums’ Foundation, took them up the River Medway from the Archbishop’s Palace, Maidstone, as far as Teston Lock, just beyond the ancient Teston Bridge which attracted universal admiration.

The weather was kind and the river peaceful, with only a fascinating linger at East Farleigh lock briefly interrupting gentle progress on a still evening. Boat owner Nick Kennedy, boat owner/captain, gave an interesting commentary on the historic and other sights passed along the way. However, there was no official mention of the naked man spotted by some baring all on the towpath! A varied buffet supper and bar, with free hot drinks, added to the evening’s pleasure.

On the return voyage, guests were quizzed on their knowledge of Maidstone.  Mike Evans, MMF trustee and trip organiser, set 25 questions which were asked by quizmaster and trustee Ivan White.  Even if they didn’t know the answers, everyone learned a lot, with a box of Swiss chocolates presented to the winner.

Mark Baker, MMF chair, welcomed everyone on board and Mike thanked Nick and his splendid crew for their excellent service. Another first-class outing from MMF.

Watch out for next year’s.
