Mayor kicks off Stones’ Soccer Show in Friends' Shop

For more than a century, Maidstone United has been a beacon of soccer in the County Town. In 2019-2020, a highly acclaimed exhibition celebrating this remarkable story of football and social history was displayed for four months in Maidstone Museum. It attracted more than 20,000 visitors. Now updated, it is back in the heart of the County Town in the Museum Friends Shop

Cllr Derek Mortimer, Mayor of Maidstone, kicked off this unique centenary celebration on November 5 when he didn’t miss a single penalty fired into the goal outside the shop, applauded by dozens of shoppers in Fremlin Walk. He wrote in the guest book: “A wonderful historic exhibition of MUFC.” Curator John Bunyard joined guests, Friends and MMF trustees for the opening ceremony.

MMF shop manager Ivan White said: “We felt that many people with an interest in Maidstone United may have missed the original exhibition and we wanted to give them an opportunity to see it. It will also be a chance for anyone who visited the show first time around a chance to enjoy the updated version. We will keep this fascinating show going for as long as there are new stories to tell.”

John Bunyard said: “I think every Stones history fan can be thankful to the Friends for providing this second bite of the cherry.”
